In one of my favorite clips ever the The English Lancers British Cavalry charges the Boer Cannon Battalion in the Boer War in 1900.

It does not look like he gets killed on the tape.
The flag is probably also a spear on the bottom.
He runs into position and uses the flag to block the view of the soldiers on the Cannon, when he is in position it looks like another British soldier shoots the flag to show them their position...the flag is being used as a battlefield marker for the soldiers locations.
The armor on the soldier is probably bullet proof...when he is position the flag gets shot with the enemy position's view being blocked.
When he falls to the ground pretending to be shot, behind him is a soldier on horseback who was hidden by the flag, when the flag moves the soldier on the horse with the lance who was blocked by the flag then kills the cannon operator with the lance in a battlefield move.
The flag bearer then gets up appears to run away and the rest of the cavalry then comes into the shot and rides safely through the battlefield, that's what appears to be on the tape.
