Cyclops visor was malfunctioning the whole episode and Kitty Pryde must have caused the malfunction on the space helmet, causing it to fire with the visor closed in outer space.
When she fell into the X-Men test range by teleporting through the wall.
Later, leading to it healing in my X-Men fan script...decades later.
Updated, here it is...
The original X-Men, then later after Giant Size X-Men #1 1975 when the new cast started they learned of Kitty's powers and then took here to the X-Men compound where her feelings read the group and then she led them into outer space killing Professor X and blowing up Cyclops helmet and then left with the new "Uncanny X-Men" team in the 1980's series.
Then it was Kitty, Dazzler Wolverine etc., with no Professor X and Cyclops changed to X-Factor.
